Majorca Opens In Hartford

The cuisine of sun-kissed European coastlines is once again coming out of the kitchen at 2074 Park Street. Majorca has opened in the former O'Porto space in Hartford, serving a mix of tapas and entrees with Spanish, Mediterranean, North African and Southern French influences.

The new venture is owned and operated by Rich Perez, a longtime manager with Hartford Restaurant Group, and chef Bernie Gorski, whose lengthy culinary resume in greater Hartford includes Agave Grill, Max on Main, Pastis, Black-Eyed Sally's, Peppercorns Grill and Billy Grant's restaurants.

"I've always wanted to do something like this. I'm Latin, this is what I love," Perez said. After 13 years at various Wood-n-Tap locations, he decided "I'm not a burger and fries kind of guy." Majorca's menu will feature 20 to 25 tapas plates and 5 or 6 entrees, he said, constantly changing.

Majorca is easing into things with a soft opening menu, with plans for an official grand opening in January. Initial dishes include small plates like pan Catalan with tomatoes and olives, fried calamari with aioli, papas fritas with Manchego cheese, Cape Cod mussels with chorizo, littleneck clams in garlic and white wine with salsa verde and an assortment of salads. Gorski says the menu will rotate as the kitchen tries out new plates.

The restaurant takes its name from the picturesque Balearic Island off the coast of Spain. "We figured that whole Majorca party island type atmosphere…that we can touch on a little influence from each place, try to keep it festive and light," Gorski said. He hopes the menu's focus on tapas will bring guests together. "We want that communal feel...people can share plates, get together over a bottle of wine."
