U.S. bowling team dazzles in Sunrise tournament

When it came time to represent its country during the annual Lee Evans Bowling Tournament of the Americas at Strikers Family Sportscenter in Sunrise, the Team USA bowling squad did not disappoint.

They excelled in the singles, doubles, mixed and team competitions in all age categories and secured 37 gold medals in 44 events during the week-long event involving about 125 bowlers.

In the Singles Junior B division (ages 12-15), Sean Wilcox and Ashley Channell took the top prize, while in the Junior A categories for males and females, Andrew Anderson and Breanna Clemmer topped the charts.

U.S. team member Rob Gotschall won the Adult Male division, while teammate Brittini Hamilton took runner-up in Adult Female. Tish Johnson (Senior Women), Rick Steelsmith (Senior Men), Carol Teel (Super Senior Women) and Sam Carter (Super Senior Men) all struck gold for Team USA.

Coached by John Gainey and Steve Padilla, the United States contingent had 20 members, including a couple of United States Bowling Congress Hall of Famers in Johnson and Steelsmith. Gainey, a previous gold medal winner in this tournament, had high hopes coming into the tournament.

"We are a pretty solid team from Juniors to Super Seniors, and we have two Hall of Famers leading the way," Gainey said. "What makes this event great is the opportunity to create lifetime friends from other countries."
