See the Movie, Skip the Turtle

In light of the release of the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie in August, the American Tortoise Rescue, based in California, is asking moms and dads to refrain from buying an actual turtle for their child.

In a letter to parents - posted on the web site - the group asserts that purchases made after the last movie resulted in the death of thousands of "pet" turtles.  Real reptiles don't perform stunts like their Hollywood counterparts, therefore, some kids find them boring.  Also, turtles can transmit diseases.

The TMNT movie, starring Megan Fox and Will Arnett, is produced by Michael Bay, maker of the Transformers franchise.

If your kid is super-excited about the flick, the group suggests buying an action figure, rather than a pet.
