When my oldest son, Sam, was just shy of two, it was summertime and I was very pregnant with his brother. I decided to leave work for awhile...to slow down before the birth of the baby and then adjust to my growing family.
On my last day, a good friend and photographer, Mike B., gave me a present...a CD mix, emblazoned with pictures from a recent 'Farewell Party'. This turned out to be the best gift anyone could've given me at that time.
Sam and I were inseparable when he was baby...I was so enamored with him and my new role as 'mom'. I admit it, while I was so excited to be pregnant with Number Two, I was also nervous....worried about how Sam would react...concerned that I wouldn't be able to give him as much of my time...fearful that our wonderful routine together would be over.
So, this disc of tunes became the anthem of that special summer.
We danced around the living room to 'Feeling Alright', 'Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard' and "Send Me on My Way'. We got a huge kick out of the fact that Sam grew to be able to identify the artists...shouting "BOB DYLAN" when 'Shelter from the Storm' came on...or, "THE BOSS" during 'Better Days'.
Well, time passed....Ben was born....he was wonderful....and, yes, the days were tough and long with two little ones. Sam was confused...and our comfortable schedule did change. But, seeing our two incredible boys become brothers was just so beautiful...and now I remember the 'new routine' with much fondness.
Sometime during this lovely craziness, Mike's CD became scratched and worn...and wouldn't play in our old Bose without skipping and stopping. I shoved it in a drawer, not wanting to throw it away despite it's uselessness.
Eight years went by...and I recently entered the Modern Age and got a smart phone...and *GASP* started to purchase music through it. One of the first things I thought was: Sam's Mix. I recently recreated it with a playlist and have started playing it again.
I can't help it...I get kind of misty when I hear 'My Next 30 Years' by Tim McGraw or 'Peaceful World' by John Mellencamp...thinking of those quiet afternoons spent with Toddler Sam...swinging at the beach, reading stories and laughing over Tigger and Roo's adorable antics.
But, now, these songs also represent the Summer of 2013...a time when the boys are 8 and 10...learning to sail, participating in theater camp while growing so capable, strong and smart. The music now reminds me of Sam...and Ben...and brings a smile to my face and a tear to my eye.
Are there songs that remind you of your kids' babyhood?
Do they mean a lot to you...whenever you hear them?
