Headed to the movies this weekend?
"Rio 2" is still going strong at the box office. No surprise, since it's colorful, spirited, fast-paced and fun.
My 8 year old and I really loved the first installment of this franchise and were excited to see the follow-up. It isn't perfect but it also doesn't disappoint. Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg are back as Blu and Jewell, two rare Spix's Macaws who live in Brazil. With their kids in tow, they head to the Amazon in search of more of these rare birds. Their flying friends, played by Jamie Foxx and will.i.am, are also along for the ride. Their roles are minor, as they audition other animals for performances in the annual Carnival celebration, but some of these scenes prove to be pretty funny.
Speaking of humorous, the villian, Nigel, played by Jemaine Clement, is back, bedraggled and fuming. His Shakespearean act and love story with a poison tree frog (a hysterical Kristin Chenoweth) make for some of the film's most enjoyable moments.
Bruno Mars is a welcome addition to the returning cast, as he sings and squawks his way through his scenes, as Roberto, a flashy member of the discovered tribe of birds.
Produced by Blue Sky Studios, the makers of the Ice Age series, the scenery is very, very beautiful...the highlight of the experience.
Like most sequels, the movie has it's problems. My husband felt like it was "Rio 1", all over again. And, our 10 year old said, "There was A LOT going on," in response to the many plot points.
But, with a G rating, "Rio 2" will appeal to almost anyone. With just a bit of suspense and a few scowling bad guys, the movie is harmless enough for a small child yet funny enough to entertain Mom and Dad.
Did your family see "Rio 2"? What did you think?
