Here's How it Could Happen to You

I can’t count how many times over the past 17 years I’ve felt a quick panic and thought “Did I forget a kid?” During the sleep-deprived days of newborns and even now, I’ve said to myself or aloud “Did we forget anybody?”

Even though my youngest is 12, I’ll still occasionally say after driving a while, “Is Carter here?” while trying to spot him in the way-back through the rear-view mirror.

So in a way, I can sort of understand how so many kids have been left in hot cars. Part of this Patch.com artice notes the fact that the number of these deaths grew around the same time as parents were told to put their kids in the back seat of the car, where they are the safest in the case of an accident.
