Fruit is really the one thing to which I attribute being able to fit into my pants. I've tried all sorts of ridiculous diets in the past and now that I’m old and have various exercise-limiting injuries, I’m confident that having access to fresh fruit every day is the reason I don’t get bummed out when I step on the scale.
But whenever I have this conversation I always acknowledge that many people living just a few miles from me don’t have that luxury. With more and more urban-based stores that offer fresh produce closing up shop, the options for well-priced and accessible foods are becoming scarce.This op-ed piece in today’s New York Times makes some good points about the merger between Dollar Tree and Family Dollar. These deals may be good for the guys at the top but it’s no deal for parents trying to feed their families healthy foods on a budget.
