Wiener's Circle sign trolls Trump — again. This time for immigration policies

The Wiener’s Circle, a popular hot dog joint on North Clark Street, again got political with its sign, taking on the Donald Trump administration’s policy of separating immigrant children from their parents when families cross into the U.S.

The marquee-style sign, which was updated late Monday afternoon, tells the president of the United States to “Free the kids” — although not without a few choice words first: “Tiny hands. Tiny wiener. Tiny heart.”

The message is in response to Trump administration actions that Wiener’s Circle creative director Brendan Kelly calls “heartbreaking” and “outrageous.”

“The whole process seems very inhumane,” he said. “Granted, I don’t think anyone expects to get political discourse from a hot dog sign, but any way we can give hope, we’re there. We, as an organization, at the bare minimum, support parents and children being together.”

This is not the first time the hot dog spot has taken a stance on the administration’s policies.

When then-presidential candidate Trump was in town for a rally at UIC, Wiener’s Circle offered a “Trump foot-long” aka 3-inch minidogs. When accusations of Russia meddling in the U.S. election were at their peak, the eatery held an April Fool’s promotion wherein they announced they had been annexed by Russia and overtaken by Vladimir Putin. And there was this gem from earlier in June: “Presidential pardons offered here.”

Wiener’s Circle also promotes the signs on Facebook and Twitter, adding additional short commentary.

Kelly said the current message will stay until the next pressing issue comes up.

“That’s the one thing about this administration: The next thing could come up five minutes from now,” he said.
