With jazz, blues and cajun cooking, Black-eyed Sally's provides a taste of New Orleans in downtown Hartford.
The Vibe Inside: There is nothing like the smell of fried food to start your mouth watering and stomach growling. After your mind frees itself from visions of french fries and catfish fingers, you notice the funky art that gives this place its New Orlean's charm. Above the unassuming bar, silver and blue bucket lights hang against a backdrop of hub caps and license plates. The decor is eclectic, but fitting of the vibe, which can only be described as down home on the bayou. A blue smoky haze would have been the perfect complement to the black walls and Elvis memorabilia.
The Crowd: Dinner reservations are recommended . The tables fill up fast and are limited near the stage. Most of the clientele is in the 30s to early-40s age range.
What to Wear: Men can wear whatever they want. Ladies, it's not a club, so you leave your stilettos at home -- unless you plan on pairing them with a Harley Davidson jacket and an 80s hair do.
The Music: The live music varies by night. A list of upcoming events is available on their website. The featured music is jazz and blues, but swing bands also perform. As soon as the lights dim, patrons flood the dance floor and keep it packed all night.
Drinks: The most popular of the signature drinks is the Hurricane. Be mindful of this French Quarter classic, it comes with the warning "no more than two per customer." Another drink worthy trying is Amy's Apple Martini. This tasty concoction puts a twist on your run-of-the-mill appletini by adding a ring of caramel to the lip of the glass. The tantalizing combination of sweet and sour can only be described as dangerous.
Eats: Even if the music was bad and the drinks were horrible, which they're not, the food would be enough to bring you back. The Louisiana gumbo is a spicy combination of chicken, crawfish, Andouille sausage and all of the goodness you could hope for in a bowl of soup.
The dinner special, a cornmeal encrusted trout, came with salt & vinegar fries. If you're watching your waistline, look out, you can't stop eating this heavenly side dish.
Costs: There's usually a cover charge for the bands, but if you're eating it doesn't seem to apply. Food is moderately priced, especially for the quality. Appetizers range from $5.95 to $7.95 and entrees are $10.95 to $12.
Bottom line: Black Eyed Sally's is a great change of scenery. Real southern comfort food, a laid-back atmosphere and live music.
