20th Century Fox
Best Supporting Actor for Australia
Baz Luhrmann and a team of casting scouts spent two years scouring Australia for an Aborigine boy to play a key role in his film about his native country. One spotted Brandon, then 11, at a swimming pool with his father, and encouraged him to audition with other indigenous boys. Brandon had never acted, left Western Australia, or heard of the films director (or stars Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman). He went anyway and made such an impression that Luhrmann asked him (and several other finalists) to attend acting workshops in Sydney, where he chose Brandon as his guy.
