Sweeties, darlings: Get ready for more 'Absolutely Fabulous'

Jennifer Saunders as Edina and Joanna Lumley as Patsy in "Absolutely Fabulous."

Pop the Champagne, sweeties; Patsy and Edina are coming back to TV.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of their comedy "Absolutely Fabulous," Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley will reprise their roles as fashionably wasted Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone in three new specials to air in early 2012, BBC America announced Monday.

Created by Saunders, the original "Ab Fab" was just that—a fabulous look at public-relations executive Edina and her magazine editor bestie, Patsy, both of whom strived to remain hip and young while terrorizing Edina's daughter, Saffron (played by Julia Sawalha), her mother (June Whitfield), and her assistant, Bubble (Jane Horrocks).

Over five seasons and several specials between 1992 and 2004, the ladies came up with various schemes so outlandish and drug- and/or drink-fueled they made Lucy and Ethel look like children on a playground. The entire original cast will return for the specials.

"Like a good bottle of Champagne, we have grown better with age but lost none of our sparkle," Saunders said in a statement. "We fully intend to party like it's 1991. When we started filming [the new specials] in West London, it was like time had stood still. It was raining. Nevertheless we are so happy to be working for an audience that has grown just a tiny bit older, like us, but is still willing to let us fall over on TV in the name of PR."

BBC America has aired the original "Ab Fab" for years, while Logo began showing the series in April 2011. The new "Absolutely Fabulous" specials are being co-produced by BBC America and Logo and will be shown on both channels. BBC America confirmed to me today that the specials will air in early 2012 as part of the network's Ministry of Laughs comedy block.
