ABC is eying a spinoff for its hit comedy "Modern Family," Variety has confirmed.

Deadline broke word of the spinoff earlier today.

Though in preliminary stages, ideas being tossed around for the spinoff include a project based on Rob Riggle's character.

"Modern Family" co-creator and exec producer Steve Levitan is spearheading the concept at the Alphabet.

News arrives as "Modern Family" returned slightly down in ratings Wednesday night on ABC, though it still performed strongly against its Big Four competitors. Series also took home the top comedy prize Sunday at the Primetime Emmys.
