Tweens love actress Olivia Holt, who has starred in the Disney XD TV series "Kickin' It" and is working on a new Disney TV series called "I Didn't Do It." The actress, 15, has been gaming her entire life, so it's fitting that she now owns part of a new video game company called PlayMG Corp. She's joined forces with NBA All-Star Kyrie Irving to work with the mobile gaming company, which offers an Android-based portable gaming device aimed at kids.
PlayMG, which launched last year, has over 60,000 app games designed for kids with a 4-inch touch screen. Holt is working with the creators of the technology and is also connecting directly with her fans through these games. The actress talks about her new role as video game executive in this exclusive interview.
Q. How did you get involved with PlayMG?
A. They kind of came to me with the device and explained to me what it was, and I literally immediately thought that it was really cool. I decided to become a partner/owner of the company, and it's been so much fun already. I'm excited where we'll get from here because I feel PlayMG has a lot to offer.
Q. What is some of the input that you've already been able to add to the company since joining up?
A. We talked about a lot of things. What's going to be really fun is Kyrie Irving, who is also a partner and owner in the company, and I will be giving weekly recommendations on apps for the kids. When they pick up the PlayMG, there will be a picture of me and then a picture of Kyrie, and when you click on either of our faces it will take you to recommendation apps that we have given for kids. Kids are constantly playing one game, and once they want to move on to another one, they can just go to our page and we'll have different apps for them to choose from, which I think is a really unique and interesting way to give kids a few more games. Also, we'll help with designing device accessories and things like that. I think it's really fun.
Q. What do you feel differentiates this device from other things that are out there on the market?
A. It's very unique. It's just a device for gaming. It does anything a smartphone can do except it's not on a data plan. It's really awesome. What I love about it is that it tends to teach kids a little bit about responsibility because their parents can only put a certain amount of money on it that they can use once a week. It's really cool because it teaches them to not constantly be spending money.
Q. How do you see the PlayMG device connecting with the growing number of female gamers that out there today?
A. I'm a girl gamer and I feel like a few years ago girl gamers were neglected in the video game market. But now you just see girls constantly playing games. What is really cool is I get to be able to talk to other girl gamers and give them different gaming apps. I think that with PlayMG we're going to change how the girl gaming marketing works.
Q. When it comes to games that you feel like would appeal to a female audience, are there any that standout for PlayMG right now that you would recommend?
A. I'll see little girls on their gaming devices, and they'll be playing fashion apps where they can design their own clothes or do their own nail art, which is a big thing. I think that's cool. They get a chance to be their own fashion designer, be their own nail artist, and I think it's actually pretty fun.
Q. What's it been like working with Kyrie Irving on this project?
A. He's such a fun dude. I love hanging with him. He was actually a guest star on the show that I work on now about a year ago and we kind of clicked. Now we're able to work together again, which is really fun. He's like a brother, so we have a good time when we're together.
Q. What are your thoughts about how far mobile games have come today?
A. It's cool because you see our generation evolving and gradually getting into something different with gaming. You see so many kids nowadays holding some kind of smartphone or some kind of portable gaming device. What's awesome is that PlayMG has everything that you need on any kind of smartphone. It has all these games and that's all they get to play. You can just literally pick it up and get on a game. It's the coolest thing ever.
Q. How much do you have to play games when filming your Disney TV shows?
A. Honestly, I have a lot of time. People don't think that I have much downtime when I'm on the set, but there is a lot of waiting around. So I do get the chance to pick up the PlayMG and play games or watch movies or listen to music. It's the perfect opportunity when I'm just waiting around on set.
