Let me get these out of the way now: "These are not the droids you are looking for"; "The Force is strong with this one"; and "Luke, I am your father."
Star Wars" quotes or references in this review, but let's get right into it.
"Star Wars Pinball" is the next version of pinball from the experts over at Zen Studios. I haven't played many pinball games that weren't in an arcade, but I was pleasantly surprised with this "Star Wars" version. Zen Studios did their homework for bringing that realistic feeling of playing pinball to the Wii U. The game has three tables to play at the start, but you'll be able to get more in the future. They were based off of "Episode 5: A New Hope," "The Clone Wars Series" and Boba Fett. Being able to play tables based on your favorite "Star Wars" moments just adds to the fun.
"Star Wars" is known for its iconic musical scores, and this game is no different. The minute you start the game, you hear classic tunes from the mind of composer John Williams. You'll also hear classic quotes from the various movies. Presentation is key in "Star Wars Pinball," and the HD visuals add to the atmosphere. While playing, you can perform different tasks to see different scenes from the series.
The game also does a great job with the off-TV mode for the Game Pad. You can decide while playing where you want to play the game. If you want to play on the Game Pad and watch TV, all you have to do is touch the Game Pad and pull your finger down and you have the game on the Game Pad. The pad version sounds and plays great, but with the images smaller, I had trouble seeing what was going on.
"Star Wars Pinball" goes that extra mile to please the fans of the movies as well as classic pinball fans. Several times while playing a round, screens popped up depicting the scoreboard of a regular pinball machine. The various game modes also show how much time was put into the development of the game. Local Hot Seat mode allows multiple players to play on the same TV/game, and you can have tournaments among your friends. The game also alerts you when you're approaching a new high score.
Now, with every good game, there are some drawbacks. I have used the Jedi mind trick to get you to read this far, so why not continue? Two out of the three tables were good games of pinball. The third table based on "Clone Wars" was all over the place and just difficult to play. I also felt that the controls didn't always feel natural, but they just take some getting used to.
To recap, "Star Wars Pinball" is a good translation of pinball to the Wii U. Through the joy of music and sound, Zen Studios has brought the best of "Star Wars" and pinball together. Let's face it, your mind will root for the Jedi, but your heart will pull for the Dark Side! It's a good game but has enough issues that keep it from being great.
