Open Road Films has acquired U.S. rights to Jon Favreau's comedy "Chef" and set a May 9, 2014 release date.

Favreau is directing "Chef" from his own screeplay and will star along with Sofia Vergara, Scarlett Johansson, John Leguizamo and Robert Downey, Jr. Aldamisa Entertainment is financing.

Favreau portrays a chef who loses his job and goes into the food truck business in hopes of reestablishing his artistic promise while trying to reconnect with his estranged family.

Karen Gilchrist and Aldamisa's Sergei Bespalov are producing with lensing starting in July in Los Angeles.

Variety first reported on April 25 that Favreau had come on board the project. It's the first directing gig for Favreau since 2011′s "Cowboys & Aliens."

Deal was negotiated on behalf of Open Road Films by Tom Ortenberg, Elliott Kleinberg and Ben Cotner. CAA, which packaged and arranged financing for "Chef," brokered the deal on behalf of the filmmakers. The deal was negotiated on behalf of Aldamisa by Jere Hausfater and Philip Elway.
