Every month has some kind of national food designation attached to it. And it seems like every day is national cheese-covered something day, or blank-on-a-bun day. As we gear up for the unofficial start of summer and grilling season, we celebrate National Burger Day on May 28. But May also happens to be National Egg Month. Eggs and ground beef don't commingle constructively in many cases, but where they really shine is at their simplest: A fried egg laid on top of a ground beef patty.

Slinging a fried egg over a steak is referred to having the steak "a caballo," or riding horseback (which makes the recent horse-meat-masquerading-as-beef scandal all the more funny). Here are some local places at which you can order a big ole' burger a caballo:


Aroma Bistro, 227 Main St., Wethersfield, (860) 436-5772. The Hangover ($8.95): beef burger with cheddar, a fried egg, crispy bacon and sautéed peppers-onions mix.

Bronx Burgers, 758 State St., New Haven, (203) 562-0660. Babe Burger ($9.50): guacamole, bacon, tomato, fried egg, jalapeno, Monterey jack. Add an egg to a burger for $0.50.

Which Came First ($6.49): ground chicken patty topped with fried egg, fried onions, lettuce and mayo; The Fat Cat ($9.99): a New Brunswick, New Jersey grease cart inspired burger topped with lettuce, tomato, onions, mayo, mustard, ketchup, pickles, slaw, fries, fried egg, bacon and American cheese.

Lepri's Burger Bar, 175 West Rd., Ellington, (860) 896-3333. Three Little Pigs ($9.50): pork, hot and sweet sausage, bacon burger, mozzarella cheese, fried egg, bacon ranch and a bacon bun.

Lyme Grill, 136 Simsbury Rd., Avon, (860) 674-1700. Build your own burger ($11) and add a fried egg for a $1 extra to a ½ pound, hand-formed Black Angus on a toasted buttered brioche bun.

Joey's Pizza Pie, 353 Park Rd., West Hartford, (860) 523-5639. Serves half-pound burgers, ground fresh every morning ($8.99). Top it for free with a fried egg.

Mo’s Burgers & Brew, 1649 Route 12, Gales Ferry, (860) 464-5550. The Highwayman ($8.99): cheddar cheese, ham, fried egg, barbecue sauce, on a sesame bun; Southern Belle ($8.99): ½ lb. beef patty, fried egg, bacon, on a glazed doughnut.
