We Americans love to snack. We can be mindless eaters, with our zombie hands roving into boxes or bags of delicious, sweet, salty, nutritionally void treats without even realizing it. This time of year typically means trying to eat healthier, and it can be hard going cold turkey on the no-junk-food wagon. Biena Foods has stepped in to help avert our diet disasters with their Chickpea Snacks.
The roasted snacks come in four flavors, all of which are made from U.S.-grown, non-GMO chickpeas, with no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives, and are Kosher certified. Biena also touts that they're made with "ingredients you can pronounce," which is always a plus. We had the opportunity to try all four varieties, and there is not one of them that I personally wouldn't pay money for. They are delicious.
The sea salt chickpeas come the closest to feeling like you're snacking on those horrible-for-you potato chips. They're crunchy with the right amount of sea salt covering each chickpea, so as to not overpower you while still hitting that salty-snack sweet spot. The barbecue flavor also tastes similar to a potato chip binge, but the flavor makes it feel so naughty. It's tangy and sweet and perfectly balanced.
The honey-roasted flavor can easily replace your need to pound a bag of the sweet and salty honey-roasted peanuts we love so much, but which are so high in fat. And if you're really looking for something to quiet your sweet tooth, the cinnamon maple flavor is for you. They are just sweet enough to keep you away from the chocolate without derailing your entire day. Did we mention they smell amazing?
Each 2 oz. bag of chickpea snacks contains two servings, but I think their portions are generous. And with each serving only having 120 calories, no trans or saturated fats, 5 grams of protein and 200 mg or less of sodium, these are perfect to keep at your desk or in your car for a quick handful of yum while you're on the go.
