What do we like best about Wood -n- Tap in Hartford? Pretty much everything. It's the type of restaurant you go to when you don't know what you're craving for lunch. The menu is extensive. In the mood for Mexican? Try Wood -n-Tap's Monster Nachos or Baja Burrito. Comfort food? The Mac-n-Cheese is just what you need. A salad? They've got you covered with several fresh selections.
THE VIBE: Laid back, low key, casual. The bar area is dimly lit, with plenty of seating at the bar. The dining room is warm, with cozy booths and tables. The service is always friendly.
THE FOOD: My friend and I are big fans of ordering a couple of appetizers and sharing. One of our favorites is the creamed spinach and artichoke dip (so delicious that I scoured the Internet for a similar recipe and have been making it for family parties recently). Spinach and artichoke hearts are blended with Reggiano parmesan cream sauce and topped with melted Jack cheese. It's served with warm corn tortillas. Another delicious app (that can actually be ordered for your entrée it's so filling) is the Monster Nachos. For $10.99 dive into a pile of chips with chicken or beef, cheese, sour cream, tomatoes, jalapenos, black beans, lettuce and salsa. A half-order is available for $7.99.
The Tap makes a thick rich New England clam chowder, fried mooz (mozzarella), softies (soft pretzels served with a honey Dijon mustard) and fried calamari.
Also popular are bar bites — mini turkey burgers, mini blackened chicken sandwiches, mini bison burgers and the original burger sliders.
Entrees includes burgers (too many to list here, but our fave is the Classic Burger), sandwiches (including an amazing veggie hummus wrap), fish, salads, steak, pizza and pasta. Burgers are made from Black Angus beef served with French fries and sweet potato fries (99 cents). Other burger choices are bison and turkey.
On our last visit in December, we spotted a winter warmer drink menu featuring a Chocolate Coffee Kiss (Kahlua, Baileys, Godiva Chocolate Liqueur and coffee topped with whip cream and chocolate shavings).
Wood -n- Tap also offers gluten-free menu options.
THE BILL: For three of us our bill was a little over $40. Not bad for lunch. Burgers and sandwiches are under $12; salads range $5.99 (a small app salad) to $12.99 (the chop house steak salad); pizza and pasta dishes are under $14. There is a late night "Tappy Hour" starting at 10 p.m. to last call featuring $3 drafts, $4 cocktails and $5 wine choices. Also six appetizers for $6. The chain has a loyalty program where you can sign up and earn points for dollar redemption value.
THE PARTICULARS: Wood -n- Tap is on the corner of Capitol and Sisson avenues. There's a small parking lot across the street that fills up quickly during lunch, but there is always street parking available nearby. Can't make it to Hartford? There are Wood -n- Tap's in Farmington, Orange, Southington, Rocky Hill and Vernon.
THE VERDICT: Even the pickiest of eaters will find something they like on on the menu. Good food, great prices and friendly service is why we keep going back.
