Watch out, beer and wine - bourbon is proving itself a worthy partner to pizza at the new Krust in Middletown.

The newest kid on the block in the city's North End, a cozy space tucked in next door to NoRA Cupcake Company, is serving wood-fired pies, craft cocktails, draft beer and a dazzling selection of bourbons and whiskeys. Co-owners Rich Garcia and Kevin Wirtes opened the pizzeria to the public on January 17.

The opening menu features two salads and a lineup of 10 pies ($11 to $14) topped with everything from pepperoni to roasted Brussels sprouts to a sunny-side-up egg. You can also create your own "blank canvas" red or white pie with choice of cheese (including smoked mozzarella and ricotta), meat (pepperoni, salami, pancetta) and vegetables/fruits (onion, pepper, mushroom, garlic, arugula salad, pineapple.) Gluten free pies are available for an extra $4. For sweets, Krust offers two daily NoRA Cupcake flavors.

Krust is at 686 Main Street in Middletown. It's open Tuesday through Thursday, 4 p.m. to 1 a.m., Friday and Saturday, 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. and Sunday, 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. 860-358-9816, krustpizzabar.com | facebook.com/krustpizzabar.
