The contest honors sustainable, organic or farm-to-table restaurants in the country. LeFarm in Westport, Seagrass Grill in Branford, Six Main in Chester and Zinc in New Haven were also among the five contenders for the recognition.
G-Zen, owned and operated by Mark and Ami Beach Shadle, is a vegan and raw-food eatery with a focus on sustainability and eco-conscious cuisine. The Shadles grow organic produce for the restaurant and their food truck, Gmonkey Mobile, at their solar-powered Durham farm, composting waste. G-Zen marks its second anniversary on the shoreline this week.
"...To be recognized on a local level for all of our hard, hands on labor and sustainable business practices, makes our labor of love that much sweeter," the Shadles said in a statement. "We couldn’t be more honored to accept this award and become leaders in the community in raising awareness about the importance of becoming more sustainable and more responsible as business owners."
G-Zen is at 2 East Main Street in Branford. 203-208-0443, g-zen.com.
