What's brunch without eggs and bacon? That's what vegan restaurateurs Mark Shadle and Ami Beach Shadle want you to discover, with the soon-to-launch "Buddha Brunch @ Soulful Saturdays" at G-Zen.
Starting Dec. 1, the Branford eatery will serve an all-vegan brunch and lunch menu on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The meatless choices include organic French toast with Vermont maple syrup and tempeh "bacon"; a breakfast burrito with scrambled tofu, salsa and Daiya cheese; a scrambled tofu platter with vegan "hollandaise;" an organic acai berry bowl with raw granola. There's even a cocktail list: Bloody Mary with organic raw sake, "Vitamin C Boost Zen-Tini" with fruit juices and raw sake; and an organic mimosa with orange and lime juices and champagne.
Lunch will feature some of the midday favorites from the Shadles' food truck, GMonkey Mobile: organic soups and fresh salads, the Zen Burger made of black beans and chipotle; sweet potato fries with housemade hickory ketchup; vegan grilled "G" cheese and the Downward Dog burrito with black beans and shredded veggies. Smoothies and fresh-pressed juices are on the menu as well.
G-Zen decided to add the brunch and lunch menu after repeated requests from patrons, Ami Beach Shadle said. The restaurant just marked its one-year anniversary on the shoreline.
