Vegan food truck Gmonkey Mobile, based in Durham, recently found its way to Greatist.com's "26 Healthiest Food Trucks in America" list. The site chose mobile eateries across the country based on "...healthy, innovative, sustainable, and gourmet approach to standard street fare."
Though the writeup isn't entirely accurate - Gmonkey is 100 percent vegan, not vegetarian - the blurb highlights the truck's use of eco-friendly biodiesel fuel, its renowned sweet potato fries and its selection of raw foods, like the "curried un-chicken salad" made from sprouted nuts and seeds.
Gmonkey, run by married chefs Mark Shadle and Ami Beach, makes regular stops at farmers' markets (Billings Forge in Hartford and Durham Farmers' Market in the truck's hometown.) Among the sample menu items: a "grilled G" sandwich on freshmade bread with Daiya cheese, pesto and caramelized onions; a scratch-made veggie burger with black bean, quinoa and chipotle; soba noodles with peanut sauce; vegan and raw desserts and specialty smoothies. The couple also serves its organic vegan fare at their Branford restaurant, G-Zen.
