Felicia Day talks about her ‘Eureka’ role

Felicia Day stands in kind of a unique place in Hollywood: She does the work she wants to do.

She started out like many actresses, auditioning for various roles, but eventually becoming part of Joss Whedon’s “Buffyverse.” Then, in 2007, she wrote, produced and starred in the first few episodes of “The Guild,” releasing them for free on the Internet. The series became a cult hit, and Day earned the names “Geek Girl” and “Geek Goddess.”

She now co-owns a production company, Knights of Good Productions, where she continues to write and produce projects. She starred in Whedon’s “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog” and appeared in his series “Dollhouse” and numerous movies and TV shows.

“A lot of people in Hollywood still don’t understand what I do,” she said during roundtable interviews at San Diego Comic Con. “The cool thing is I’ve decided to not care what they think as much.”

I chatted more with Day at Syfy’s party later that weekend, where she repeated that sentiment, and told me that she’s basically loving her life right now. She’s doing all the things she enjoys thanks to the hard work she put in creating her own special niche.

That includes playing Dr. Holly Marten on Syfy’s “Eureka.” She’s in seven episodes this season, and will be back next season, which Syfy recently announced would be the show’s last. (Boo!)

“It’s been a really empowering journey because I decided to define myself rather than let someone else define me,” Day said. “That seems to be resonating with other people, and Holly Marten is kind of the epitome of that. They really created a role that specifically challenged everything I love in one character in a world that I love.”
