Lea Salonga joins Il Divo for 'A Musical Affair'

In the devoted relationship between the men of singing group Il Divo and their fans, Lea Salonga is the other woman.

Salonga took London by storm in 1989, then conquered Broadway two years later, as the original star of "Miss Saigon." She's joining Il Divo on the quartet's latest tour, "A Musical Affair," which stops in Orlando on Monday.

"Il Divo draws women," says Salonga, 43. "There are lot of women who don't like the fact there's another woman onstage with them."

The Internet bears her out: "I am sorry I bought my tickets for your Phoenix, AZ concert before you told us you were going to have a female tagging along to fill up your concert," wrote one disgruntled fan on the group's website. "I bought the tickets to hear IL DIVO, not some female."

Salonga, of course, is not just "some female." For her "Miss Saigon" role, Salonga won Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Theatre World awards in New York after winning the Olivier, London's equivalent of the Tony. Since then, she has played both Eponine and Fantine in "Les Miserables," starred in "Flower Drum Song," hosted television shows and sold millions of albums.

She laughs off the Internet doubters.

"I think they get it once they see the show," she says from a tour stop in Mexico. "I've gotten some really nice messages after the show."

The concert's selections come from Il Divo's latest album of the same name, which is a tribute to the music of Broadway. Among the songs: standards such as "Memory," "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" and "Some Enchanted Evening." During the concert, Salonga performs five songs with Il Divo and three solos.

Among the duets is "A Whole New World," from Disney's "Aladdin," the 1992 film for which Salonga provided the singing voice of Princess Jasmine. Despite the love songs onstage, Salonga says backstage is far from romantic.

"The ladies should never feel threatened, they're like my brothers," she says. "There's a lot of teasing."

Besides, Salonga's not available. She has been happily married for years and "my husband's kind of hot," she says, giggling. Their daughter, nearly 8, is on tour with her, and the two plan to hit up Disney World.

Of course, providing the singing voice for Jasmine, as well as Disney's Mulan, has its perks.

"My daughter's never going to know the experience of waiting 2 hours in line for Space Mountain," Salonga jokes. "I get Disney princess privileges."
