Joe Lovano

Among peers and jazz critics, saxophonist Joe Lovano has achieved a sort of living-legend status, but that doesn't mean he's ready to stop trying new things. On Thursday, the Grammy-winner and Cleveland native premieres a new Trio Fascination lineup — bassist Peter Slavov and drummer Lamy Istrefi — at Wesleyan's Crowell Concert Hall, and they'll be joined by Lovano's wife, singer Judi Silvano, on certain numbers. (No pressure or anything, but the gig places Slavon and Istrefi in good company: they'll join bassist Dave Holland, drummer Elvin Jones, harmonica player Toots Thielemans, trumpeter Dave Douglas, drummer Joey Baron and bassist Mark Dresser as Lovano-trio alums.) A recording of this group in the near future wouldn't be surprising, but in the meantime, go hear Lovano and company while the music is still in its elemental stages. Showtime is 8 p.m.
