Talking music with Rashida Jones

RedEye's Lenny Gilmore shoots Rashida Jones at the Peninsula Hotel in Chicago (Matt Pais/RedEye / July 26, 2012)

In about a week-and-a-half I'll post yesterday's very fun interview with"Celeste and Jesse Forever"star/co-writer Rashida Jones.

For now, here's a snippet from the conversation that has nothing to do with the movie (opening Aug. 10) or anything elsejust an enjoyable discussion about music with someone who, in my opinion, has quite good taste.

Photographer Lenny Gilmore (to me): Did you listen to that new Passion Pit album?

Me: Yeah, it’s good.

Rashida Jones: Passion fruit, what?

The new Passion Pit album.

Oh, is it good?

It is good.

I love them. Is this the first album since the last one? [Laughs] The one that has, (sings/hums part of Passion Pit’s “The Reeling”)?

It’s been a while.

It’s been a while. For some reason I got confused with them and MGMT for just one moment in my life. Because the MGMT that came out after their good album was not good. It was a [bleepin’] hail storm.

What are you listening to now?

I just downloaded the new Fiona Apple album. Robert Glasper. Are you down with Robert Glasper? He’s amazing! Why did it take me so long to find him?

I’m usually sold on any jazz/hip-hop combination.

Me too. It literally cannot go wrong for me.

What do you think is the best Tribe Called Quest album?

Oh, that’s so hard. You know what, I have to say, I mean, “Low End Theory” is the obvious answer. (whispering) “Midnight Marauders” is pretty amazing. I mean, it’s the way things are supposed to progress forward.

I think it’s more consistent.

And then I gotta say what I liked even better than that: Q-Tip “Renaissance.” That album is incredible. Talk about jazz/hip-hop fusion. Right now it’s all Frank Ocean, all the time for me. I can’t get enough; it’s out of control. The Passion Pit’s good? I’m psyched that that’s good. I don’t know if that album’s out yet but I love that Major Lazer song “Get Free.” Amber from Dirty Projectors and Diplo-- that song gets me so good. Maybe we’ll play it later. We were just saying we haven’t played enough music on this trip. We’ve had like two songs. What did you play the other day? Big Pun, “Still Not A Player (remix).” And I played Frank Ocean. And Miguel. Do you like Miguel? Good R&B.
