The indie act, based in Canada, topped the U.S. pop charts with its third album, "The Suburbs," awarding its label, Merge Records, its first-ever No. 1 album. What's more, the Arcade Fire did so by outselling Eminem, moving 156,000 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The act has been ruling the digital sector, having sold 122,000 downloads in just two weeks (out of a total 209,000 sales over the span). And that doesn't even touch on the music. "The Suburbs" is a full album experience, with themes and sounds shifting in and out from song to song. It's quieter and less anthemic than past efforts from the act, but over the course of 16 tracks, the Arcade Fire crafts a novel-like look at a residential life populated with broken dreams and sprawling strip malls.
