Johnny Depp joins the sequel to J.K. Rowling's 'Fantastic Beasts' in a mystery role

Johnny Depp is headed to the wizarding world. The actor has been cast in the sequel to “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” alongside Eddie Redmayne

Recently revealed as the first of a five-film series, “Fantastic Beasts” stars Redmayne as Newt Scamander, a British wizard and magizoologist who comes to 1926 New York, unaware of the rising tension between the magical community and the No-Majs. It will be the first onscreen portrayal of the wizarding world in North America.

Depp, who most recently was seen reprising his role as the Mad Hatter in “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” will appear in a cameo in “Fantastic Beasts.” No details about his character have been revealed.

“Fantastic Beasts” takes its title from a Hogwarts textbook about magical creatures written by Scamander. The real-life version of the fictional book was published in 2001, written by “Harry Potter” series author J.K. Rowling in Scamander’s name.

Directed by David Yates, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” marks Rowling’s screenwriting debut. The film hits theaters Nov. 18.
