Fans are coming to the rescue of the Field of Dreams, a famed movie setting that, thanks to vandals, now looks a little less like heaven and a little more like Iowa.
The Dyersville, Iowa, baseball diamond made famous by the 1989 Kevin Costner film of the same name was found damaged Tuesday morning.
Property owner Denise Stillman says an unauthorized vehicle drove onto the field Monday night, leaving deep gashes in the rain-softened ground and damaging the sprinkler system, the Associated Press reported.
Stillman has launched a fundraising campaign to fix the damage to the free-to-visit site that welcomes more than 100,000 visitors each year. She also wants to install a security system.
One day later, with donations still being accepted, the internet had already provided $12,300 of Stillman’s $15,000 goal.
Dyersville police released a statement Thursday stating they’ve been speaking to witnesses about the case, as well as with a person of interest, and expect to have more information to share next week.
