RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- R&B singer Etta James is said to be gravely ill and her husband is seeking a court order to control more than $1 million of her money.
The 72-year-old "At Last" crooner, who lives in the Woodcrest section of Riverside County, has been diagnosed with dementia and is undergoing treatment for leukemia, The Press-Enterprise is reporting, citing court documents.
A court hearing is scheduled for Friday. The singer's husband of 41 years, Artis Mills, is seeking control of her finances.
James gave power of attorney to sons Donto James and Sametto James and Donto's wife Christy in February 2008.
Donto James told KTLA last year that his mother had entered a treatment program to shake a dependency on painkillers and over-the-counter medicine.
She was later hospitalized with sepsis, he said.
James, best known for her hit song, "At Last," lives in Woodcrest.
In 2009, the legendary crooner made headlines after Beyonce sang "At Last" at President Obama's inaugural ball. She bashed both the president and Beyonce, however, Donto James said his mother would not have acted that way if she were in her right mindset.
