This year, there's an expanded nominee field in select categories.
The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced in February that its Board of Governors had voted overwhelmingly to increase the number of nominees for outstanding comedy and drama series, as well as outstanding lead and supporting actor and actress in comedy and drama series from five to six.
Academy Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John Shaffner said the move was an effort to recognize "the amount of great television and fine individual work that is seen across the enormous spectrum of the television universe."
The nomination process was also changed, with the "two-phase" nominating process in the series and performance categories eliminated. Instead the nominees in the comedy and drama series categories is determined by the votes of the entire academy membership, while the nominees in the comedy and drama performer categories is voted on by the Performer Peer Group, Shaffner said.
The 61st annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be presented Sept. 20 at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles with Neil Patrick Harris as the host.
