Hey Paula

Paula Poundstone is a funny woman. Whether as a panelist on NPR’s “Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me,” an author, or the voice of Brendan Small’s mother in the underrated cartoon series “Home Movies,” Poundstone can keep a crowd laughing without even trying too hard. At Hartford’s new Infinity Hall, she will do what she does best — stand-up.

Good Wood

Woody Guthrie had one of the most honest American voices there ever was. He wrote “This Land Is Your Land,” hopped freight trains with hobos and stood up for unions. “Woody Sez: The life and music of Woody Guthrie” tells his story, and it’s running at TheaterWorks Hartford right on through until the official end of summer, having been extended by popular demand.

You’re Getting Sleepy

Sleepy LaBeef is a 79-year-old rockabilly legend. His new album and DVD “Sleepy LaBeef Rides Again” documents his drive to keep making music even as the years keep rolling by. The 6’7″ Arkansas native has shared bills with Elvis Presley, George Jones, Roy Orbison, Wanda Jackson and Carl Perkins.

Hair Today

Hair Fantasy & Barber Battle is an event at which hairdressers, stylists, students and barbers can show off their snipping skills on stage to benefit Wigs for Kids. It’s presented by the Marinello Schools of Beauty at the Society Room of Hartford and will be hosted by Hot 93.7’s Jenny Boom Boom, Ricky Trendy Da’Vista and Justin “the Doctor” Gordon. Just In Case

Peter Case is a songwriter’s songwriter. His tunes have been played by folks like James McMurtry, Dave Alvin, Chris Smither, Alejandro Escovedo, Robert Earle Keen, Hayes Carll, the Flaming Groovies, the Goo Goo Dolls, John Prine, Maura O’Connell and Mark Mulcahy. He was a member of Plimsouls, the Nerves and the Breakaways, but these days he plays his vintage rock sounds under his own moniker.
