The Carbone family has been in the restaurant business for more than 50 years. They are back in a familiar location in Bloomfield. The family ran W.B. Cody's in the spot now occupied by Carbone's Kitchen, in the Wintonbury Mall. Vinnie Carbone is the owner and Paul Rafala is the head chef.
THE VIBE: Casual Italian. Patrons are greeted by a host and led to a table in one of the four dining rooms (one is private) or guided to the large bar area. Black is the accent color, with booths, wrought iron wine rack and ceilings. Service is professional and food delivery is prompt.
THE FOOD: While the mood is comfortable, there's nothing casual about the food. Our party of three went for Sunday afternoon dinner, a fixed price ($24.95) menu served on family style platters. It included an appetizer of mini Arancini di Riso, fried and cheese-stuffed rice balls served with a light red sauce. That was followed by a tossed garden salad with sherry vinaigrette dressing served with a small loaf of bread, with oil and butter dip. There were three entrees, chicken Marsala which came with a deep brown sauce; tenderloin meatballs, which were giant orbs served over braised kale; and penne and ricotta with a creamy red sauce. Dessert was three ample slices of a creamy, rum flavored tiramisu.
The portions are generous (we ate a second meal of leftovers on Monday, and our party included a young man with a healthy appetite.)
There is a small bites menu, which includes cheeses, red peppers and prosciutto and mini meatballs.
THE PARTICULARS: Hours are Monday through Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday, 4 to 10 p.m.; Sunday, 3 to 9 p.m. Lunch is served M-F from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Dinner served M-F 5 p.m. to closing, Saturday 4 p.m. to closing, Sunday 3 p.m. to closing.
THE VERDICT: A welcome addition to the Bloomfield restaurant scene. On the regular dinner menu prices for entrees range from $17 to $25. Lunch includes sandwiches, burgers and panini. Entrees range from 11 to $17. Everything is a la carte, so the Sunday Dinner menu is a good value.
