Abdoulaye Sylla taught West African dance at Trinity College for many years before moving out to Seattle in 2009. He also led weekly drum and dance classes at Hartford’s West Indian Social Club.

The classes were a dynamic hub for drummers and dancers around the Northeast interested in the rich music and dance cultures of Mali, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Burkina Faso and Sylla’s native Guinea. Sylla, who performed with a legendary national drum and dance troupe from Guinea, routinely brought master artists from around West Africa to the region for classes and performances.

He also led numerous drum-and-dance study trips back to Guinea. His talent and enthusiasm helped foster a thriving network of West African drum-and-dance events around the state, and he returns to Manchester to lead a djembe drum class of one of his former students, Rick Liegl. Monday, June 8, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., $20, beginners welcome, extra drums available. C.A.S.T. Theater, 113 Summit St., Manchester. Information: drumeventsunlimited.com.
