Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” had a hand in an upstate New York village’s vote on whether to change its long-time logo, which has been called racist because it appears to show a white man grabbing a Native American around the neck.

Videographers from “The Daily Show” and correspondent Jessica Williams were on hand when about 200 residents of Whitesboro voted Monday on whether to keep the historic logo or choose from an assortment of alternatives, mostly supplied by the comic news show’s artists. The vote was 157-55 in favor of keeping the current logo.

Mayor Patrick J. O’Connor tells the Utica Observer-Dispatch he knows the intent of “The Daily Show” is to provide comic relief on issues but he felt holding the vote would make sure something positive came from it.
