"Before we start the show, let's all take a knee, ladies and gentlemen," he announced.
Maher went on to lambast Trump, calling him the "drunk at the end of the bar, bitching about football." He asserted that Trump is probably okay with O.J. Simpson, since he never took a knee. "Took a few heads," Maher joked. "But never a knee."
The HBO talk show host also contributed to the steady stream of criticism Trump has been receiving for his lack of response to the burgeoning humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico after it was hit by Hurricanes Maria and Jose. "Let's tell Trump there are lots of black people kneeling in Puerto Rico, maybe he'll get focused on that," he said. "He'll get on it when he finds out they speak Spanish and can come here anytime they like."
HHS Secretary Tom Price's recent departure from the Trump cabinet after his extravagant private plane expenditures were brought to light was also touched upon, with Maher quipping that "Trump will head down [to Puerto Rico] as soon as one of his cabinet members frees up a plane."
The "taking a knee" controversy was kicked off last week when Trump told a rally in Alabama on Friday, "Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say: 'Get that son of a b-- off the field right now, out. He's fired. He's fired!'" Trump also posted a few tweets criticizing players who kneel during the national anthem, calling for a boycott of the NFL. Numerous athletes, team owners, and others involved in the sports industry have come out in support of the players.
