Phylicia Rashad has signed on to direct a play called "Immediate Family," in a new commercial production to be staged this summer in rented space at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago.

The play, which is produced by Paul Boskind, Ruth Hendel and Stephen Hendel, is penned by Paul Oakley Stovall, a one-time Chicago actor and writer who has returned here frequently to work (most recently in "The Invisible Man" at Court Theatre).

"Immediate Family," billed as "a new American play," is set in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago and involves the revelation of secrets at a family reunion.

Previews begin June 2 in the Goodman's Owen Theatre; opening is set for June 8.

The cast,  mostly  Chicago-based, features Shane'sia Davis, J. Nicole Brooks, Patrick Sarb, Phillip James Brannon, Kamal Angelo Bolden, and Cynda Williams.  Earlier versions of this play, under the title "As Much As You Can," have been seen in fringe venues in New York and Los Angeles. The Chicago production is produced "in association with" About Face Theatre. An actress and director on stage and screen, Rashad remains best known for playing Claire Huxtable on "The Cosby Show."

Tickets for "Immediate Family" ($20-$54) go on sale April 23 at 312-443-3800 or goodmantheatre.org.
