Watson, 23, opened up in the April issue of Elle, which inside has the risk-taking fashionista clothed in designs from Versace, Michael Kors, Céline and Chanel. On the cover, the British star is photographed by Carter Smith in a cotton shirt and calfskin pants from Balmain next to the coverline: "Watch the throne: Emma Watson is ready to prove herself -- and gutsy enough to do it."
Whatever could that title be alluding to? Well, the former child star grew up right before our eyes in the eight-film wizarding franchise, which spanned a decade between 2001 and 2011. And she'll likely forever be known as the girl who played Harry's frizzy-haired, know-it-all sidekick, Hermione Granger -- a notion that doesn't sit well with her.
Last summer, Watson told Entertainment Weekly that being typecast in elevated genre films gave her "a sense of paralysis and stage fright for a while." Not surprisingly, she's often asked about "Harry Potter" and its effect on her career.
So, following her completion of the blockbuster films, the actress got a long-overdue pixie cut and decided to take some time off from Hollywood and go back to school, taking courses on-and-off at Brown and Oxford universities.
Watson has made only a handful of big-budget films since "Harry Potter," taking on small parts in 2011's "My Week With Marilyn" and 2013's apocalypse comedy "This Is the End." But she also took on starring roles in the indie darlings "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" in 2012 and "The Bling Ring" in 2013.
As it turns out, Watson envies up-and-coming Hollywood starlets who didn't have to go through puberty in the public eye.
"There are all these actresses who have emerged in the last year or two, and they get to emerge as this complete human being. And I'm so jealous!" she told Elle.
It's a shame the teaser quotes don't name names.
"I remember reading this thing that Elizabeth Taylor wrote," she said. "She had her first kiss in character. On a movie set. It really struck me. I don't know how or why, but I had this sense that if I wasn't really careful, that could be me: that my first kiss could be in somebody else's clothes. And my experiences could all belong to someone else."
