DanceWorks, Field Museum among Chicago groups getting MacArthur grants

DanceWorks Chicago, eighth blackbird and Walkabout Theater Company are among 12 Chicago arts organizations receiving grants for international collaborations from the Chicago-based John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

The MacArthur Foundation created its International Connection Fund in 2008 “to enable arts organizations to launch new partnerships and creative projects with cultural organizations in other countries,” according to the foundation. To date, the foundation has distributed more than $3.5 million for these ventures.

Following is the complete list of this year’s recipients:

Cambodian Association of Illinois: $50,000 to document stories of genocide.

DanceWorks Chicago: $35,000 to create dance pieces with a German troupe.

eighth blackbird: $40,000 for a collaboration with a Hungarian composer.

Ensemble Dal Niente: $35,000 for developing new music in Panama.

Experimental Sound Studio: $10,000 for an exchange with China.

Field Museum: $45,000 to generate visual works with artists in the Philippines.

Fifth House Ensemble: $40,000 for a partnership with musicians in Israel and Germany.

Green Star Movement: $50,000 to install murals in Brazil and on Chicago’s South Side.

Kuumba Lynx: $50,000 for youths from Chicago and Malaysia to produce a performance piece.

Natya Dance Theatre: $50,000 for the creation of a dance work with an Indonesian troupe.

Walkabout Theater Company: $35,000 for a partnership with counterparts in the United Kingdom.

Window to the World Communications, Inc./WFMT: $50,000 for a series of radio documentaries and podcasts exploring music in New Zealand.
