Opening Friday:

"Black Mass" (R): The Oscar buzz has begun for Johnny Depp's portrayal of Whitey Bulger, the violent South Boston gangster who became an FBI informant to bring down a rival Mafia family.

"Captive" (PG-13): A recovering drug addict (Kate Mara) is held prisoner in her own apartment by a fugitive convict (David Oyelowo).

"Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" (PG-13): After escaping the maze in the first film, Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) and his fellow Gladers must negotiate a dangerous barren landscape in this second installment of the series based on James Dashner's young adult novels.

"Everest" (PG-13): This you-are-there 3D account of the doomed 1996 attempt by a group of mountain climbers (Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes and Jake Gyllenhaal) to scale Mount Everest opens for a one-week exclusive run in IMAX theaters only.

In stores Tuesday:

"Cinderella" (DVD/Blu-ray): Kenneth Branagh directed this live-action reimagining of the Disney classic with the same sweep and pomp he used in his Shakespeare adaptations.

"Furious 7" (DVD/Blu-ray): The box office smash roars onto DVD and Blu-ray with an "extended edition" that's a whopping three minutes longer than the theatrical cut.

"Love and Mercy" (DVD/Blu-ray): Paul Dano and John Cusack take turns portraying Beach Boys singer Brian Wilson during the recording of the group's seminal "Pet Sounds" album and 20 years later.

"Empire: The Complete First Season" (DVD/Blu-ray): Year one of the hit Fox TV series about the hip-hop industry arrives just in time for catch-up binge-watching before season two premieres.
