It’s kind of a “contemporary” routine. You can tell because they’re both barefoot and the song is sad. All snarkiness aside, it’s a tremendous performance with some amazing moves, including a lift in the middle that had to take nerves of steel. At one point Kellie does this incredible forward lean, with her feet braced by Derek on the floor, that I’ve only seen done before by a professional dancer with an exhibition troupe on “So You Think You Can Dance.” It means she has not just nerves of steel, but also abs of steel.

Carrie Ann is just crying and hugs Kellie long and hard. Len gives her a standing ovation. Bruno said it had a spellbinding beauty. Tom says offhandedly to Kellie & Derek, “If he gives you a 7 tonight, I’ll kill him myself.”

Scores:  Carrie Ann: 10, Len: 10, Bruno: 10

As Len brandishes his paddle, he says, “Should be an 11.” See what happens when you overscore, withperfect scores, the second routine of the night, hmmm?

Zendaya & Val Chmerkovskiy

I really love the brother/sister vibe between Zendaya and Val. They’re doing a combination of cha cha, contemporary and hip hop. Their theme is inspiring kids, so they’re bringing in a bunch of kid dancers. It’s fun watching how quickly they pick up the choreography from Val. Tiny little professionals.

From the outfit, this looks like the number they must have been rehearsing when Val got injured during rehearsal.  As promised the beginning is cha cha and then morphs into a little bit of contemporary and what I would call “lyrical hip hop” after my years of “So You Think You Can Dance”-watching. I like all the partner work they’ve put into the routine. The kids come out on stage to join them for the last bit, which is very clearly hip hop.

Len liked all the different styles coming together like they did. Zendaya says she has a “unique luminosity.” Carrie Ann says she showcased why she’s such an incredible role model and calls her divine.

Scores:  Carrie Ann: 10, Len: 10, Bruno: 10

Scoreboard:

Zendaya & Val: 30 +5 +30 = 65
Kellie & Derek: 30 + 4 +30 = 64
Aly & Mark: 28 + 3 + 30 = 61
Jacoby & Karina: 27 + 2 + 27 = 56

I kind of had a feeling Zendaya and Kellie would end up as the top two, but I’m disappointed that Aly got scored so much higher than Jacoby. I hope viewer votes really come through for him to get him into the top three. And maybe tomorrow’s instant dance will help him, but usually the judges score those so that they don’t end up mattering that much.

As to who’s going to win the whole thing? My money’s on Pickler.
