Next week, Northern State University will offer its first jazz and voice camps.
The two camps, both scheduled for July 10-13, are open to junior high and high school students. Registration is still open for any student in grades 6-12.
The camps will be at the same time in the Johnson Fine Arts Center, studios in Spafford Hall and NSU’s newly remodeled Krikac Auditorium. Though classes are separate, organizers are considering allowing students to participate in both camps. Social events will be together.
The voice camp director is Darci Bultema, an assistant professor of music who specializes in voice and opera. The jazz camp director is Terry Beckler, NSU’s assistant director of bands and professor of percussion, percussion methods and literature and music appreciation.
Other music faculty members involved in the voice camp are Michael Skyles, NSU professor of voice, vocal pedagogy, diction and musical theater; and Wendy van Gent, Northern’s director of vocal jazz and professor of music education, choir and voice. Also featured at the camp will be Seth Honerman, who will teach acting, and local music educators Mary Marion and Ron Parker, who will be the accompanists.
Parker will also be featured at the jazz camp, along with Jon Bakken, the music teacher at Selby Area Schools. Other NSU music faculty members involved are Fred Hemke, professor of woodwinds, jazz studies, arranging, woodwind methods and literature; Grant Manhart, assistant director of bands and professor of high brass, jazz studies, music appreciation and brass ensembles; and Dennis McDermott, adjunct professor of jazz studies.
