The restaurant's checkered flooring, striped awnings and squeaking screen door brought us back 20 years — and it still takes two friends to help you finish the banana split!
Where to go: Smithfield Confectionery & Ice Cream Parlor
Address: 208 Main St., Smithfield
Hours: 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday to Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday
Price range: Half subs for $3.50-$5.25; deli sandwich combos (with chips, pickle, soda and ice cream) for $6.99
Fantastic find: Bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich (Smithfield and bacon — can this sandwich be anything other than bacon bliss?)
Crisp, smoky bacon with cool lettuce, tomato and mayo on golden toasted white bread — nothing fancy, just the perfect melding of pork and garden.
Freakish, flavorful ice cream find: Hershey's Playdough ice cream — a vanilla-based ice cream tinted a very bright yellow, with hot pink and blue swirls and chunks of cookie dough throughout. It was a winner (keep your eyes closed if you have to).
Bargain hunters take note: You can pick up a "Passport to Savings" discount card for special pricing in many of the shops along Main Street. The card is currently available in the Smithfield, Isle of Wight Convention and Visitors Bureau on Main Street in downtown historic Smithfield. The Smithfield Ice Cream Parlor offers a "buy three single scoop cones and get the fourth single scoop cone free" special with the use of the discount card.
