A church in Suffolk caught fire Wednesday, a city spokeswoman said.

Someone passing by Village Christian Fellowship Church in the 3000 block of Bridge Road reported the fire to authorities after 8 p.m. There, firefighters and police at the scene found heavy fire and smoke coming from the 1,000 square-foot building, said Suffolk spokeswoman Diana Klink.

Officials said there was no one inside the building, and crews had the fire under control at 8:40 p.m.

The city’s fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire, Klink said.
