Joey Prata, a rising sophomore honors student at St. Christopher's School in Richmond who is a Seaford resident, won the 2013 USA Wrestling Cadet Greco-Roman National Championship on Monday afternoon in Fargo, N.D.
Prata, a Virginia Independent Schools state runner-up as a freshman last season, went 8-0 at 100 pounds and earned a 7-0 win over Arizona's Danny Vega in the championship final. Prata was fourth in Cadet Greco-Roman last year.
The tournament has drawn more than 800 wrestlers from 45 states. Prata will try to win a freestyle wrestling title later this week.
Representing St. Christopher's in the prep-school nationals, he placed fifth at 106 pounds to gain All-American honors and help the Saints place 16th. He won the East Coast Nationals in March in Richmond, took third in the National High School Coaches Association Freshman Nationals in April -- going 7-1 in that event -- and was a first-team All-Metro selection by the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
He has wrestled for the Virginia Predators' club team, which practices in Chester, and has trained at the Body by D Gym in Yorktown.
Wrestling is a family pastime for the Pratas; Joey's sister Lauren, 12, who was in seventh grade at Yorktown Middle School this year, recently captured a big title, taking the 90-pound crown at the recent U.S. Girls Wrestling Association National Championships in Michigan.
