The Region I individual tennis tournament's first day looked a lot like the Bay Rivers District version, except in boys doubles -- where most BRD teams struggled.
In girls singles Monday, Jamestown High senior Leah Walter and her sister, freshman Anna Walter, won two matches apiece on their home courts to ensure a rematch of the district championship contest.
Leah won 6-0, 6-2 against James Monroe's Alicia Paulose, then 6-2, 6-3 versus York junior Teresa Alvarez.
Anna posted a 6-0, 6-3 win against Spotsylvania's Bailey Christoforatos, then overcame York's Gaby Tersigni 6-2, 6-3.
In boys competition, though, the singles title match well could be one of unfinished business.
BRD champion Kurt Mittmann, a Bruton junior, rolled into the final. He whipped Courtland's Marcus Mitra 6-0, 6-1 in the morning, then ousted York's Ethan Buck 6-4, 6-1.
On the other side of the bracket, Eagles exchange student Fabian Schleicher of Austria provided much of the day's drama. In the first round, he edged No. 2 Battlefield seed Matt Peacher of Eastern View 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 6-4.
Much as he did in the district tournament, when he survived late cramps to win a three-set match against Poquoson's Austin Gillem and eventually place second, Schleicher won a marathon early in the bracket. But this time, the road would be far rockier.
Fitzhugh Johnson, who already led James Monroe to the Region I team championship, manhandled Jamestown's Sam Ross 6-2, 6-0 in the first round and shut out the weary Schleicher 6-0, 6-0.
So the Johnson-Mitttmann championship singles match will be a rematch of a contest that didn't finish in the team tournament.
When Bruton traveled to Fredericksburg in a team quarterfinal, JM completed a 5-0 victory over the Panthers before Mittmann and Johnson could finish their match. Johnson -- a transfer from Fredericksburg Academy -- was leading 3-0 in the third set.
But at 9 a.m. Wednesday, the boys will start from scratch. The singles match of the Walter sisters -- Leah won the district final 6-4, 6-3 -- also will begin at that time.
After that, the doubles semifinals and championship matches also will be played Wednesday.
By Bay Rivers standards, the girls doubles quarterfinals went exceedingly well, but the boys doubles were forgettable.
BRD girls went 4-0, with the district champion Walters and runners-up Elizabeth Wallace and Kathy Sharp of Jamestown losing just two games in four combined sets.
Grafton's Sydney Short and Kayla Jefferson rolled 6-1, 6-0 to move into a match against the Walter sisters, and Alvarez and Kristin Dantzler won 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 against Eastern View's AnnaKate Tyler and Rose Bennett. The Falcons' pair will take on Wallace and Sharp.
Of the four BRD boys tandems, only the district champs -- Mittmann and Patrick Riley -- advanced. Two pairs of Eagles (Nathan Campbell-Derrick Neilson and Sam Ross-Mike Jones) lost in close fashion.
Only the winners in singles and doubles will advance to the state semifinals in the New River Valley. The Eagles are headed to team quarterfinals against Handley a week from Tuesday -- the Jamestown girls will be at home by virtue of their Region I championship, while the boys must travel to Winchester to meet the Judges.
