Group 3A East:

In a matchup of programs savoring their first trips to the state team tournament, York captured the Group 3A East regional championship with a 5-1 victory over Lafayette inside Centre Court Racquet Club.

The Falcons defeated the Rams for the third time this month, each at a different venue. In the regular-season finale for both, York won 7-2 on Lafayette's courts to garner a Bay Rivers District championship banner.

Next, in the Colonial Rivers Conference tournament final, the Falcons won 5-2 on their home courts.

Each team then won a pair of matches in the regional to ensure themselves of being in the state final four, and York was scheduled to be at home for Round 3 against the Rams. But rain prompted a move to indoor hard courts in Newport News, where York maintained its unbeaten status.

In individual matchups that are becoming familiar, York won on lines 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 to clinch its triumph, thanks to Colonial Rivers singles champ Teresa Alvarez, conference singles runner-up Gaby Tersigni, Kristin Dantzler and Casey Jutras.

Haley Quarles, at No. 5, was Lafayette's victor, but the Rams couldn't get a second match to force the Falcons to need a doubles triumph.

Both teams will return to action June 9 in the state semis. The Falcons will play host to Spotswood, the 3A West runner-up, and the Rams will take on 3A West champion Western Albemarle in the Charlottesville area. Western Albemarle shut out Spotswood 5-0 Thursday.

The semifinal winners will head to Lynchburg for the championship match.
