With dozens of pro scouts watching some of the nation’s best senior players, one of the few who grew up in Virginia put on quite a show at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament.
Roanoke native Jamelle Hagins, an All-Colonial Athletic Association post player for Delaware, had 29 points and 11 rebounds Wednesday night at Churchland High to lead Portsmouth Partnership to a 90-89 comeback victory against Mike Duman Auto Sales.
Hagins shot 12-of-19 from the floor and had three steals and a block.
DeShawn Painter, who grew up in Norfolk and played one season for Old Dominion after his transfer from N.C. State, shot 7-of-11 and had 16 points and six rebounds for the Duman team.
Tennessee State's Robert Covington had 21 points to lead Duman's squad, which was up 80-74 with 6:36 remaining but hit a cold spell down the stretch.
In the tournament's first game, Villanova’s Mouphtaou Yarou had 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead K&D Round’s Landscaping to a 91-67 win over Norfolk Sports Club.
Iowa State’s Will Clyburn led NSC with 25 points, while East Carolina's Maurice Kemp had sevven points and five rebounds.
Six K&D players scored in double figures. Brigham Young's Brandon Davies was 6-of-8 from the field en route to 16 points and eight rebounds.
The tournament resumes Thursday with a 3:15 p.m. consolation game between Norfolk Sports Club and Mike Duman Auto Sales, followed by night games between four teams making their debuts.
