Jamestown’s Anna Walter won the Group 4A Conference 19 singles championship, beating Powhatan’s Olivia Chadwick 6-2, 6-2 in the final.

Walter won her earlier matches in the tournament even more easily, including a 6-0, 6-1 win against Tabb's Taylor Hogge. Walter is following in the footsteps of her older sister, Leah, who won the Bay Rivers District and Region I singles titles a year ago. ...

Boys soccer:

In the Monitor-Merrimac Conference 2 quarterfinals, Bethel's Malik Warner netted a penalty kick in the 33rd minute to lift the Bruins past fourth-seeded Kecoughtan 1-0 in Grassfield's stadium.

Bethel moved into a semifinal at 7:30 p.m. Friday against top-seeded Grassfield on the Grizzlies' pitch.

Also, Western Branch ousted Woodside 5-2 to earn a semifinal berth against Oscar Smith, which the Bruins will play at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Grassfield.

Marco Puentes and Nevalle Ocasio scored for Woodside. ...
