Inside the BRD: 6 Bay Rivers schools will compete in the Virginia Duals

When the 33rd Virginia Duals wrestling tournament opens Friday morning at the Hampton Coliseum, Poquoson's Islanders will continue their distinction of being the only school, both high school and college, to participate in every one of the duals.

Poquoson will be one of six Bay Rivers schools competing.

New Kent and Smitnfield are in the always tough National Division, the division that includes the top state and national teams.

Grafton is in the American Division, while Jamestown, Poquoson, Tabb and York are in the Black and Blue Division. Tabb has missed only two duals and will be competing for the 31st time.

Grafton and York were late additions to the original field, which was announced in December.

Here are the first-round pairings and match times for the Bay Rivers teams. When they wrestle after that is dependent on how the team progresses.

NEW KENT: The Trojans face Virginia Group AAA power Colonial Forge at 11 a.m. Friday. Colonial Forge is seeded third and New Kent is unseeded.

SMITHFIELD: McDonough of Baltimore finished fourth in the National Division a year ago. The school is seeded second behind South Plainfield, N.J. Smithfield's match also begins at 11 a.m.

GRAFTON: The Clippers open up against top-seeded Great Bridge at 5 p.m. Friday.

JAMESTOWN: The Eagles' debut in the Virginia Duals takes place at 5 p.m. Friday. The opponent is Region I foe Eastern View of Culpeper.

POQUOSON:The Islanders are seeded fifth and take on Deep Creek at 5 on Friday. Should Poquoson and Jamestown both win or lose, they would meet each other in the next round.

TABB:The seventh-seeded Tigers face Peninsula District rival Hampton at 7 Friday night.

YORK: Grassfield, the sixth seed, is York's first-round opponent. That match starts at 7 Friday night.
